Michail Botwinnik
(1948 bis 1957, 1958 bis 1960, 1961 bis 1963) 1911 in St. Petersburg geboren, war Mikhail Botwinnik seit seiner Jugend ein überzeugter Kommunist, der es später verstand, sich bestens mit dem Stalin-regime zu arrangieren. Als Professor der Elektrotechnik beschäftigte er sich mit Computerschach, doch berühmt wurde der Patriarch, wie ih alle nannten, als Begründer der legendären Sowjetischen Schachschule, in die er raffiniertes Eröffnungswissen, excellente Endspieltechnik und die Kunst der psychologischen Vorbereitung einbrachte. Botwinnik starb 1995 in Moskau.
